A father's letter to his son's teacher!

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,

Steer him away from envy,
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.

Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon…
Teach him to listen to all men…
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.

Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad…
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness…
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.

Let him have the courage
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!

Individual Contributions

"Never underestimate what you can bring to the table." - Rob Cooper, on StackOverflow.
I read that and immediately went back to a time earlier in my career. I worked in a large team of IT workers, with a variety of skills and experiences. Each of us had an area we specialized in (databases for me), but we had to cross train and handle calls and issues in other areas at times. Being a diverse team of about 20 people, we all had noticeable strengths and weaknesses. Some people were talented in almost all areas and could figure things out. Some struggled and sought out the experts in areas outside their own constantly.
We had one person in particular that was fairly low down on the skill level, and was in charge of a number of administrative-type tasks for the IT infrastructure. Things like basic group/user security, handling simpler AD tasks, things that you usually task to a junior level individual. I often heard others complaining that this person could not carry their own weight, or didn't do enough work.
However when this person went on vacation, and someone else had to fill in, I'd hear more complaints about having to do basic tasks, like managing groups or setting permissions. I couldn't imagine the way a team would work if it was filled with highly talented, highly capable superstars; we'd never get any work done because of the constant complaining.
We all have a role to fill at times in our lives. Sometimes it's a high level role, and at times it's a low level role. Each of us brings value for the work we do, and none of us is any "better" at life than any other. The lead developer might seem like they are more important than the secretary or the cleaning crew, but those other contributions are important as well. They're valuable, and they should be appreciated.

Love your child!

It is great to be in love. Your child is so lovely that any parent would love him/her most. Love is not limited to loving what we possess and you get chances in life to know it and practice as well.

Enjoyment may transit to higher levels when you are capable of not getting sad for long. When you are able to reduce your sad moments to 'moments' only knowing that this will change. Then you are able to learn that all possession is temporary and it will change. So you enjoy current situation knowing that it will change and continue to enjoy the 'change' as well.

You are great as you also grow with your child. God is within us but most apparent in the child. So your child deserves all the love and attention you can give to him or her.

Kahlil Gibran On Children

Kahlil Gibran On Children

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Keeping Engaged

I don't know many people that have been at the same job for a decade or more. Even those that might be working in the same desk have often seen their company change, or their job change in that time. It makes me wonder if the era of working for one company is completely dead for IT workers.

If that's the case, then do workers move on when they get bored with their jobs? Is there anything you can do to stave off boredom or re-invigorate people about their work? I think you can, and it requires a bit of a balance between ensuring that specific tasks are complete, and giving people the freedom to pursue the things that matter to them.

That doesn't mean that your Exchange administrator gets to go teach music on company time, but it could mean that the "backup guy" gets some training in ASP.NET and the chance to build some tools that he or she would enjoy. Or perhaps it means allowing the DBA time to sit and learn some C#. It's often the case of finding out what people enjoy about their work, or what they'd change, and helping them to move more in that direction.

It also means that you change the workload slightly, and don't expect the person to continue to get the same amount of boring work done while tackling some other interesting projects. A balance is needed to ensure that a person doesn't get burnt out. If you don't reduce the boring workload, the interesting stuff will get dropped, and you will have an unhappy employee.

The key to this is communication. Managers need to explain the need for some work to get done, but also listen to employees and ensure they are getting time to enjoy work. Otherwise you might find yourself losing more high performers and retaining the low ones.

Yoga camp at Patanjali Yog Peeth, Haridwar.

I got a chance to attend Baba Ramdev's yoga camp from 4th Aug. to 9th Aug. 2010. I reached PYP Phase II on 3rd Aug. at 10 PM and after checking in an air-conditioned room (a free privilege for being Life Member, otherwise it costs one Rs. 7000 for duration of camp including food), I had food at Prasadam. I got a room partner, a man age 32 from a village near Bhiwani, Hariyana, who is a yoga teacher and diehard fan of Baba Ramdev.

I enjoyed the morning session till 8 am on 4th Aug. taken by Baba Ramdev himself and training all of us around 400 attendees in Pranayam and Yoga - asans. These attendees included around 200 members, 100 paid attendees and some full timers who have decided to devote life for Baba Ramdev's mission, including Bharat Swabhiman, aimed at changing the political system and improve governace in India. Baba thinks that if we are able to reduce corruption, the country will progress very fast.

In the evening from 3 PM to 7 PM, there was a birthday celebration of Baba's closest ally, his right hand, Acharya Balkrishna. It was a big show followed by cultural programme even though no minister from state or central government was there. It was followed by dinner for public at basement below the hall and for camp attendees at Prasadam. The food was served with sweets and different curries. The service for public was chaos. It was unbelievable to watch the way people were struggling to get their food and was disgusting to see such treatment to invitees from various ashrams in Kankhal or family members of workers of PYP. The cultural programmes consist of classical music, dance and some folk songs in praise of Baba Ramdev and yoga show by Baba's Gurukul students. Some Saints from Haridwar also participated.

Next day, 5th Aug., also started with morning session of Yoga by Swami Ramdev. Next session was at 4 PM by some lady doctor at PYP. I found it difficult to sitting idle for the full day, so decided to leave and returned to Jaipur at 10 Am. There was a big rush on the road due to kawaria's mela and I could reach Jaipur by 3 AM on 6th Aug.

Kawaria is an interesting term used for people who go to Haridwar during first fortnight of hindu month Shravana (during July or Aug.) to fill Ganges water in pots and put them on their shoulders tied with a stick. It looks like a balance and called 'kawar'. These people to reach to their home town which is sometimes as far as 500 kms and offer this Ganges water to Lord Shiva at home town. During the whole route, there were big arrangements by local people at each village/town/Metro city like Delhi for rest and food for these kawarias. I must accept that I felt great respect ('shraddha') for faith ('astha') of these people. If somebody asks me that should he walk 500kms with Ganges water and offer it Lord Shiva, I would definitely say No to him. But when I saw them tired but walking and smiling faces full of devotion, I got filled with respect for their courage and strong faith. I had the same feeling when I visited Kumbh Mela at Haridwar during April 2010.

Now I know how India could survive all these attacks and still save its culture. The reason is this faith of people, 'aastha' in 'dharma' and common man's devotion to traditions. Survival needs roots and roots are held by these traditions and customs spread all over common man's thoughts and practices. The nation doesn't survive with few literate people copying ruler's fashion and style, The nation in the heart of common man.

Does Experience matter for software programmers ?

Software programming needs understanding the problem and the programming language and tools and platform being used for solving the problem. Experienced programmers tend to solve the problem with old procedural methods where as for object oriented programming you need a different approach. Even if a person is having experience in objected oriented programming, it does not mean that he or she is well versed with new updates being delivered on that platform.

The easiest way to become a good programmer is to read help thoroughly for each and every control or statement, that you are going to use to solve the problem at hand. Another important aspect is code refactoring. Whenever you repeat any 2-3 lines of code in more than one method or form, just think that is it possible to create a class or inherit a class or create a new method and call that repeatedly. If you make this decision only second or third time while repeating code, it is easy to implement. Later on, you think that it is more work involved in changing old methods or classes as they have been used at many places and you tend to avoid the change. At some point later, you realize that it has become a headache to maintain so many repetitions of code, and you plan to launch a code refactoring project and need resources for the same. Whereas if you are aware about code refactoring at all times, it saves your time, energy and does not require you to take code refactoring as a separate job.

Just be aware of new versions/updates to the tools being used and read what the developers of these tools have written for you and you will start belonging to the class of just 1% good programmers out of the whole set of programmers getting bored with their job or blaming others for not getting enough rewards. To be really successful, you don't need to be only programmer or only UI designer or only system analyst. You must be all at the same time, aware of everything what you do and aware of every tool, statement and function you use.

Why not first time ?

In my two decades of work in IT, there is one thing that I've seen over and over. It could be inside companies of any size or a part of new start up ventures. There seems to be this idea from all developers, and DBAs, that they have the solution. They know what to build and they'll build a wonderful piece of software the first time. They might be right, but it's not likely.

Too often we don't build the best software the first time. It's certainly not all our fault since there are plenty of business people that "think" they know what they want, but they really don't until they see something. And then start asking for a new piece of software, or substantial modifications to what they have.

Building software is hard, and as I spend more time in this business I think that building something great takes time. Like fine whiskey, it must age, mellow, and be tended along the way. It's not like a house where everything is planned from the start, but more like an evolving Formula-1 car that is tweaked and tuned with the user inside of it.

Can we recycle electric bulbs?

Today I had to change electric bulb in bathroom and my 13 yr old son Vinayak asked me that can we recycle the electric bulb or not. With my limited knowledge, I replied him that due to vacuum inside bulb, it may not be possible. But he questioned that can we not create vacuum as well.

I think it can be a good business proposition to recycle electric bulbs if it can be done as cottage industry in small towns and villages. Lot of bulbs get fused in India due to fluctuation in voltage and other reasons. It may reduce costs and save the environment as well.

Attention for entrepreneurs!

A DROP OF WISDOM
- Pravin Gandhi, Managing Partner, SeedFund
I have often seen that new entrepreneurs worry too much about valuation. They should focus on creating value and not valuation. And by value, I mean find paying customers, create an IP and/or a brand - the revenues will follow. Once you have revenues, manage costs so that profits grow - only then you'll have a valuable enterprise.

Remember that Angels or funds who agree to invest in your company also have to make money. They make bets, some work and some don't. So unless the investor asks for over 50% ownership, its OK.

If you feel shortchanged on ownership, ask for an incentive for a superlative performance. If you are a passionate entrepreneur, you ought to be interested in getting on with the job, instead of wasting time looking for the best valuation.

My favourite quotations

A man reveals his character even in the simplest thing he does.-Jean de La Bruye're

Sleep at night as if it is your last day of life. When get up in morning, thank GOD for providing one more day to enjoy.

Enjoy every moment.

The only way to enjoy is to learn.

The only way to have more is to give.

The money spent belongs to you, the money with you does not belong to you, if it did belong to you, it would have accompanied you. Nothing goes with you except your mind full of memories (Sanskar).

You can give only what you have. You should be happy if you want to make others happy. By getting sad of not enjoying your things and leaving them for others, you get nothing. Sacrifice can be done only by happy people. Having pain in your brain, you don't help anyone.

Your tears are precious, don't waste them.

Your deeds, thoughts and every action are being recorded. The recorder (Chitragupt) is sitting within you and will accompany you even beyond this life.

If the money is taken away from people, it is as painful as taking away skin from body.

Leave the person for the welfare of family, Leave the family for the welfare of city, Leave the city for the welfare of nation and Leave the whole world for your own welfare.

With empty pockets, you may not be confident.

All addictions come from lack of confidence.

There is nothing like over-confidence. Lack of confidence is displayed as over confidence by aggressive personality.

Nobody is perfect. But it does not mean that you stop trying to be perfect.

The new generation is smarter. Still to understand some ideas, you have to be older. Being old for getting experience is too costly affair.

Your parents want nothing but smile on your face.

You must spent time with your parents, your spouse, your kids to make them happy. You must spent time with your friends to make yourself happy.

Being transparent is better than not being transparent.

TRUTH is panacea for most 'communication' diseases.

Love is sweet poison for all enemies.

You can't purchase someone by money but find out value.

There is nothing like too much love. There is nothing like too little money.

What happens in your life?

You can see it yourself. Whatever happens in your life is what you want!

I want IT to be done.
I want IT not to be done.

Just check your life and see that every time "IT" has been done. The universe (or GOD for you, or existence for some) does not listen to NOT (negativity) and everthing is done as per your thoughts.

If you believe 100% what you think, say and act, the only thing to happen in this world is that your thought will become reality.
